After a long rainless summer, valley and roadside dust loads a filter fast. Oak and grass pollen does it again from March into June. Wildfire ash is the worst of it. It settles in attic returns and filter cabinets, and it is fine enough to pass a loose filter edge entirely. So replacement interval here is not a calendar number. First question is where the filter lives. Many 1950s-80s tracts here put the furnace on an attic platform with the filter in the blower cabinet. Slab homes with perimeter ducting often filter at a hallway or wall return grille instead. Some houses have both. Some have a grille filter and a bypassed cabinet slot nobody has opened in years.

Fit matters more than the MERV rating printed on the box. Nominal size on the frame is larger than the real dimensions. A filter that rattles in the slot lets dirty air curve around it, and that air lands on the evaporator coil. Check the airflow arrow points toward the blower.

If a new filter collapses or whistles, the return is undersized or leaking. That is a duct problem, not a filter problem, and swapping brands will not fix it.
