Register Cleaning in San Jose, CA

What register cleaning actually involves in San Jose homes

Valley dust settles hard after a long rainless summer. Then March brings grass and oak pollen. Register faces in San Jose show it first. Gray fanning marks around the louvers are the tell. That staining is filtered air leaking past the grille edge, not dirt on the fins. Wiping the face hides it for a week.

The work is in the boot, not the grille. We pull the register, vacuum the boot cavity, and look down the first few feet of branch. In 1950s-80s ranch tracts that branch is galvanized sheet metal in a vented attic. In anything after about 1990 it is insulated flex. Flex sags between supports and ponds dust at the low point. Attic traffic from solar and electrical retrofits crushes it near the boot.

Floor registers in older slab tracts are different. In-slab ducting takes on water in winter. You will see silt, rust flakes, and sometimes standing moisture under the grille. Cleaning the register there treats a symptom.

Remodel debris is the other common find. Drywall dust and screws sit in branch lines for years.

If the boot is disconnected or the slab run is wet, register cleaning is the wrong job. We say so and show you the photo.
